Department Profile

About   The Department

The department came into operation from the academic session 1985-86 with the introduction of H.S. course with 25 numbers of students. Classes were started in the Arts building from 12/9/1985 in the morning shift and shifted to science building in 17th October, 1986. Degree course (core only) was started in the academic session 1987-88 with 13 students. 1st batch students appeared B.Sc final examination in 1990 and 12 students passed out of 13 students. On 28th December, 2002, honorable M.P. Mr. Drupal Borgohain laid foundation stone for separate chemistry laboratory from his local area development fund and was inaugurated on 17th july, 2004. Late Prafulla Dev Memorial Chemistry laboratory was donated by Mr. Bipul Dev and his family. B.Sc (major) classes were started from 2005-06 academic sessions with 15 students. Newly constructed building was inaugurated by Mr. Pradyut Bordoloi, honorable Education Minster of Assam in 27th oct 2014. Now our department has seat capacity 40 per semester.

    What should a student do if they experience or witness ragging?

    The Department follows a strict zero-tolerance policy against ragging as per the guidelines of the University Grants Commission (UGC). Any student experiencing or witnessing ragging (physical, verbal, psychological, or online) should immediately report the matter to:

    • Anti-Ragging Committee / Anti-Ragging Cell
    • Head of the Department (HoD)
    • College Anti-Ragging Squad

    Complaints may be submitted in writing or via the official helpdesk email. All complaints will be treated confidentially, and strict disciplinary action will be taken against offenders.

    Where can a student file a complaint regarding sexual harassment?

    Complaints related to sexual harassment should be submitted to the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) constituted under the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013.

    • Contact the Presiding Officer of the ICC
    • Submit a written complaint (offline or email)
    • Seek confidential guidance before filing a formal complaint

    The identity of the complainant will be kept strictly confidential, and due process will be followed as per legal provisions.
